Abstract

634,997. Screwing-up machines. EMAIN, J. E. M. Feb. 28, 1947, No. 5764. Convention date, June 28, 1946.. [Class 83 (iii)] A machine for screwing-up the nuts of wheel spokes comprises a frame, a wheel-hub supporting member positionally adjustable with respect to said frame, wheel locating rollers secured on the frame and arranged to grip the wheel rim, an automatically declutching screwing-up device for the spoke nuts, means for moving said device towards each nut in turn and means for rotating the wheel in steps to position each nut successively in the screwing-up position. A frame 1 carries two rods 4, 5, slidably mounted in bearings 2, 3 and connected at one end by a cross-member 6, adjustable wheel-hub supporting spindles 8, 9 being carried at the opposite end. Two rotary discs 15 mounted on the frame locate a wheel rim 14 in position and the spindles S, 9 are so positioned relatively to the discs 15 that the wheel hub is held slightly offset from the centre of the wheel rim. The various operations of the machine are controlled by three cams 35, 52, 66 mounted on a shaft 36 which is rotated through gearing and a dog-clutch (not shown) by a belt-driven pulley. The cam 35 operates a push-rod 34 to actuate a lever 30 carrying a pawl 28 acting on a gear 27 having 72 teeth (representing twice the number of spokes in a cycle wheel) to cause stepped rotation of a control drum 25. The control drum 25 carries a 36-tooth member 37, a stepped cam-member 44 and a projection 88. The member 37 rocks a lever 39 by a pin 38 engaging the crests and roots of teeth 37 to control the alternate setting of a screwing-up device 23 toward either edge of the rim 14, the device 23 being slidable along but keyed on a shaft 24. The cam 66 actuates a lever 65 to advance the screwing-up device to the spoke nuts, a pulleydriven screw-driver 21 being centred on the nut by a sleeve 63. The screw-driver is bored to provide a clearance for possible projecting spoke-ends and is provided with a spring- pressed ball clutch 61 which allows slip at a predetermined screwing resistance. The rim 14 is rotated in steps by a pawl 56 engaging under each spoke nut in turn and actuated through levers 54, 55, by the cam 52. After one complete screwing-up operation the stepped member 44 allows a rider 45 to fall on a depressed portion 44<SP>11</SP>, causing a lever 48 pivoted on a shaft 47 to disengage an abutment comprising rollers 49 from the head of a pin 50<SP>1</SP> securing a collar 50 to the rod 5. A spring 51 then causes a retraction of the shaft 5 with the wheel-hub supporting spindles 8, 9 to centralize the wheel hub for a second screwing-up operation. Finally the projection 88 on the control drum 25 actuates a lever 87 to remove a lever 83 from the path of a stud 81 on the clutch lever 80 and thereby disengage the dogclutch and stop the machine.
