Abstract

634,675. Electromagnetic sound recording. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and POLGREEN, G. R. July 7, 1947, No. 17863. [Class 40 (ii)] In electrical recording or reproduction apparatus of the type employing a magnetisable recording tape, the tape 1 is fitted to the apparatus in the form of a flexible endless band and is driven by a motor-operated drum 2 past electromagnetic scanning heads 12, 13, 14 which are driven in a direction parallel to the axis of the drum 2 so that the tape is spirally scanned. The scanning heads may be driven by a lead-screw 16 which is operated through gearing by the drum motor and may be clutched to the common support 15 of the scanning heads; alternatively, spiral grooves may be provided in the tape and co-operate with the scanning heads to cause their transverse movement. The support 15 may also carry a soft pencil &c. which marks the tape and thereby indicates the portion of the tape which is scanned. During recording such marking may be varied automatically and thus provide indications of no-signal periods. The tape is passed over rollers 3, 4, 5, the roller 3 being carried in movable bearings on a lever 9 which may be raised to tighten the tape on the rollers or lowered to permit removal of the tape.
