633,541. Diaphragms for electrolysis. LAPORTE CHEMICALS, Ltd., (formerly LAPORTE, Ltd., B.)., BISHOP, C. 0., and HULLAND, H. L. Feb. 17, 1948, No. 4659. [Class 41] An electrolytic box-type diaphragm comprises a framework of solid material which is an electric insulator and is inert to solutions of sulphuric acid, persulphuric acid and their salts, the framework having at least one porous ceramic diaphragm plate welded or cemented thereto. As shown, the diaphragm comprises a narrow rectangular box made from sheets of plastic material joined together by cement. In each back and front wall two porous ceramic plates are inserted in the spaces 2, the plates being cemented at the edges to the framework and to backing strips of plastic material. The framework has a baffle plate 6 and an inlet tube 7 and outlet tube 8 for the electrolyte.
