Abstract
632,279. Fire alarms. P.E.C.O. (ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS), Ltd., and REECE, M. P. Nov. 25, 1947, No. 31185. [Class 47 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A fire alarm operated by the temperature of the surrounding air comprises a detector 1 consisting of a loosely-wound resistance-coil a and a closely-wound and insulated resistance coil d arranged in parallel with one another and each in series with a coil e or f of a relay 51 controlling a movable contact 11 which cooperates with fixed contacts g, h to operate a lamp 61 and, through a relay 12, a bell 81. A number of detectors 1 may be arranged with their coils a, d separately in series. The coils e, f of the relay 51 are balanced by a potentiometer R<SP>1</SP>, but are unbalanced, upon a rapid rise in temperature, by changes in the resistances a, d, and, upon a slow rise in temperature, by a resistance b in series with the resistance a and normally short-circuited by a wire c connected by an easily fusible alloy 6. The system is automatically re-set due to a resistance R2 arranged across the coil f being thrown into circuit by a contact 14 closed by the relay 12. For testing the system, a two-way switch 23 may be provided which normally completes the circuit between the resistance R<SP>2</SP> and the point 24, but when switched over, puts the potentiometer R<SP>1</SP> in shunt with the coil e to upset the balance. A fault is indicated by a lamp 18 and, through a relay 19, a buzzer 21, controlled by a switch 17, closed by a relay 15 when the current therethrough falls below a predetermined value.
