632,213. Apparatus for bringing a gas into contact with a liquid. LUMMUS CO. Aug. 3, 1943, No. 33278/47. Convention date, June 22, 1942. Divided out of 632,144. [Class 55 (ii)] An apparatus for bring'a gas into contact with a liquid comprises a number of tubes 20 positioned in a vessel 10 and having their lower ends projecting into a feed chamber 11 divided into two sections by a plate 23, the gas being fed through an inlet 26 into the upper division and the liquid through an inlet 25 into the lower division of the feed chamber passing into the tubes 20 through the aligned jets 29 and entraining the gas so that the liquid and gas pass up the tubes together, the temperature in the tubes being controlled by circulating a cooling medium externally of the tubes in the vessel 14. The vessel 10 is preferably divided into several sections such as 12, 13 and 14, the temperature in each of which may be independently and automatically controlled, and in which additional quantities of gas or liquid may be added to the tubes 20. The tubes 20 may be packed with Raschig rings or similar packing material 23 and may be notched at their ends. Liquid and gas are separated in the chamber 15 the gas leaving by an outlet 40 and the liquid by the pipe 39. In a modification the liquid may be introduced at the upper ends of the tubes 20 for counterflow contact between the liquid and gas. The apparatus is particularly adapted for halogenating aromatic hydrocarbons by the process described in Specification 632,144 in which case the packing material in the tubes may be impregnated with ferric chloride and the liquid products of' the reaction are neutralized in the chamber 60.
