Abstract

The tendency of textile materials consisting wholly or partly of wool to shrink is reduced by immersing the materials in an aqueous solution containing one or more chloramides or chlorsulphonamides which do not yield chloramines in cold acid solutions, and having a pH not greater than 2 and a chloride ion concentration greater than 0.3 N. Compounds of the general formul <FORM:0631141/IV (c)/1> where R is an amino, alkyl, or aryl radical, R1 and R11 are alkyl or aryl radicals, R111 is an alkylene radical, and R1111 is an aryl or hydroxyl radical, may be used. Dichloramides or dichlorsulphonamides may be used provided they do not hydrolyze to chloramines. The chloramide may be N-monochlor-urea, N-chloroacetamide, N-chlorosuccinimide, or N.N1-dichlorobiuret. The chlorsulphonamide may be N-chlorosulphamic acid, N-dichloro-toluene sulphonamide, or the sodium derivative of p-toluene-sulpho-chloramide (Chloramine T). The acidity of the solution may be due to the presence of sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric, or hydrochloric acid. In the latter case the addition of further chloride ions may not be necessary. The solution may contain calcium, magnesium, potassium, or sodium chloride. The presence of the chloride ions enables smaller proportions of the organic compounds of chlorine to be used, e.g. amounts equivalent to 2-4 per cent of available chlorine. The N-chloro compound may be formed in the treating solution by mixing the appropriate amide and hypochlorite or chlorine in the aqueous solution. In examples, knitted wool fabrics are immersed for 40 minutes at 40 DEG C. in aqueous solutions containing 0.5 per cent of sulphuric acid, sodium chloride in concentrations of 3-10 grams per 100 m.l., and N-monochlorourea in amounts equivalent to 3-8 per cent of available chlorine based on the weight of wool. Specifications 482,656 and 595,518 are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of N-chlorostearamide, preferably in solution in an organic solvent containing dissolved hydrochloric acid.
