Abstract
A sulphur dioxide compound of p-aminodiethylaniline, as described in Specification 626,958, [Group XX], for use in colour photographic development is made by reacting p-amino-diethylamiline with sulphur dioxide in presence of approximately one molecular proportion of water. Conveniently the reaction is effected in an organic solvent medium such as diethyl ether or ethyl acetate, in which the water can be dissolved. Example 1 describes the passing of sulphur dioxide gas into ethyl acetate with external cooling to form a solution thereof, addition of this solution to one of p-amino-diethylaniline in ethyl acetate containing the required quantity of water, and filtration and washing of the precipitated product. In example 2 sulphur dioxide gas is bubbled through p-amino-diethylaniline cotaining water, with ice cooling, to produce a thick paste, which is extracted with diethyl ether to remove any remaining free base and then washed and dried. The Provisional Specification states that the process may be applied to the production of sulphur dioxide compounds of other aromatic amines, in particular those described in Specification 629,558, [Group XX].
