Abstract

630,638. Impedance measurements. FOXBORO CO. June 10, 1947, No. 15263. Convention date, June 12, 1946. [Class 37] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A circuit for measuring impedance, e.g. the resistance of a temperature, conductivity, pressure, humidity or strain-sensitive element, comprises (1) a first potentiometer consisting of impedances 66, D, 64 across a source 14, impedance D being shunted by a variable impedance 40 in series with an impedance 76, and (2) a second potentiometer consisting of impedances 52, S, 50 across a source, impedance S being shunted by impedance A, the condition responsive or unknown impedance 57 and impedance C, the potentials at Y, W, being compared in a null indicator 30 and impedance 40 being adjusted to secure balance. Preferably any out-of-balance current actuates a motor 36 which controls recorder 42 and adjusts impedance 40 to produce balance. As shown, both potentiometers are supplied from the same source so that they form a bridge. Impedances D, S are selected from D1 ... D4, S1 ... S4 to provide four ranges within which impedance 57 may lay. Each resistance A is equal to the sum of the corresponding resistance C and the value of the resistance 57 at the mid-point of the corresponding range ; the resistances A, C preferably have a low temperature co-efficient, and the arrangement is such as to compensate for the non-linearity of the variation of resistance 57 with temperature. As shown, the source 14 is an A.C. source, and the phase of the potential at W and Y is compared in indicator 30 to actuate motor 36 to reduce the phase difference to zero. Adjustment of impedance 76 permits the zero of the circuit to be adjusted. Specification 646,981 is referred to.
