[Class 29] An open-access display case has a goodssupporting bin 16 spaced from the bottom 4 and air circulating ducts 20, 28 extending around the bin with refrigerating means 24 in the duct 20 and a fan 36 forcing a curtain layer of air horizontally across the upper portion of the case between openings located below the upper edges of the walls. The back and side walls 2, 8 are insulated and the front wall comprises multiple glass panes 10. A baffle 18 extending upwardly from the floor 16 of the goods-supporting bin is spaced from the rear wall 2 to form the duct 20 in which the finned refrigerator pipes are arranged. The rear wall 2 has a forwardly projecting portion 32 from which depends a baffle 34 so that air flowing horizontally across the top of the show case will pass beneath the baffle 34 and flow downwards over the refrigerator, the fan 36 forcing the air up the duct 28 bebetween the glass front 10 and a glass sheet 26 to pass beneath a deflector 30 which guides it horizontally across the case at about 100 feet per minute. A portion of the air from the space 38 passes upwardly into the bin through slots 42 arranged adjacent dividing partitions 44 so as not to be covered by the goods. A lamp 69 is arranged behind a reflector 70, the heat of the lamp preventing the glass pane 72 beneath it becoming dimmed. For defrosting the evaporator 24 a time switch 60 operates a switch 56 to stop the fan 36 and close a solenoid valve 50 supplying refrigerant, and open a valve 48 supplying hot refrigerant liquid from the condenser. After defrosting is complete a bellows 66 returns the switch 56 to its normal position. A gutter 54 collects melted water from the evaporator. Warm air rising from the evaporator during defrosting is trapped in a chamber 58 formed by the baffle 34 and prevented from reaching the display space. A small fan 59 maintains a slight flow of air during defrosting.
