Abstract

629,542. Automatic control systems for supply systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and KELLY, R. Oct. 29, 1946. Nos. 32042 and 36583. [Class 38 (iv)] In automatic voltage-regulating equipment for a power supply system comprising an electric regulating motor controlled by auxiliary relays operated from the " high voltage " and " low voltage " limit contacts of a marginal relay, if the auxiliary relays are operated simultaneously additional means cause the motor to either operate in a predetermined direction or stop. The invention is described in one embodiment with reference to an A.C. supply system in which a motor, which positions the tapping of the supply auto-transformer is controlled by two auxiliary relays, selected by a single marginal relay connected across the output; provision is made to prevent damage through the simultaneous operation of the auxiliary relays or the interruption of the supply to the control system. As shown, the tapping TC is positioned by motor MD1 to maintain the A.C. voltage at L2, N2 between limits. The motor MD1 and auxiliary relays HV, LV are supplied with A.C. through the fuses F3, F4 and the marginal relay with D.C. from the rectifiers W1. With a change in the voltage at L2, N2 beyond the limit values, the marginal relay JV selects one or other of relays HV, LV to cause motor MD1 to correct the position of TC. If either or both of fuses F3, F4 blow, the control system is rendered inoperative and no regulation occurs. If both auxiliary relays HV, LV are otherwise simultaneously operated, the contact hv3 is opened and the motor MD1 lowers the output voltage. A -similar contact may be included in series with hv1 so that upon simultaneous operation of HV and LV, the motor MD1 is disconnected. In a second embodiment a D.C. shunt motor which is connected directly across the supply to be stabilized, controls the regulation, and its direction of rotation is determined by auxiliary relays in the armature circuit which are operated by a marginal relay across the supply. Simultaneous operation of the auxiliary relays or failure of the fuses between the supply and the control system arrests control. Specifications 514,167, 514,294 and 515,948 are referred to.
