Abstract
629,160. Control systems for consuming devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Jan. 29, 1946, No. 2876. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In an electronic device for controlling the magnitude and phase of a square wave alternating potential in accordance with the magnitude and sense of a unidirectional potential, a reference square wave alternating potential is applied to the grid of an electronic tube V2, the anode of which is connected to a tap on an impedance 3 in the anode circuit of an electronic tube V1 having a common cathode resistance with V2. The unidirectional control potential is applied to the grid of VI. The amplitude of the reference potential is sufficient to drive V2 from the grid current point to cut off on alternate half-cycles, and the bias developed across the common cathode resistance cuts off V1 while V2 is conducting, and allows V1 to conduct while V2 is cut off. The voltage drop across the impedance is applied to a utilization circuit, which may be a motor control device, and the tap is adjusted so that, when the control potential is zero or a predetermined datum value, the voltage drop across the impedance when V1 conducts equals the voltage drop across the tapped-off portion when V2 conducts, and the potential applied to the utilisation circuit is consequently zero. Deviation of the control potential from zero or datum varies the conducting current of V1 so that a square wave alternating potential appears across the utilisation circuit dependent in magnitude and phase on the magnitude and sense of the control potential. The reference alternating potential may vary sinusoidally.
