[Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] Hoisting or excavating-apparatus comprises a positively-controlled jib and a digging and grabbing member composed of radially-movable buckets which is connected positively to the jib in such a manner that it can be turned to any angular position relatively thereto. The buckets 12, 13 are pivoted to a member 14 which can turn on a shaft 15 mounted in the end of the jib 3. A toothed sector 16 secured to the member 14 also can turn about the shaft 15 and is rotated by a hand-driven pinion 17. The sector is locked in any adjusted position either by a pin passed through an aperture in the jib and through one of the holes 18 or by non- reversible gearing through which the pinion is driven. When the grab is working on a ceiling, the bucket 12, Fig. 6, is provided with a screen 40 on which collects the waste dug out during closing. The screen also protects the control mechanism and serves to discharge the waste into the bucket 13 when the two buckets are closed. The bucket 13 is provided with shutters 38 and 39. When working on a vertical surface the screen 40 is omitted but shutters 38 and 39 are retained. The shutters are removed for normal working. In a second embodiment, Fig. 8, the grab member is arranged to be maintained in a substantially fixed position relative to the ground as the jib is luffed by a system of articulated rods 30, 31 pivoted at 32 to the sector 16, at 33 to strut 5 and at 34 to a short rod 35 pivoted to the jib. The desired orientation is selected by inserting the pivot 32 in any one of the holes 18. The opening and closing of the buckets is carried out by means of a pair of cables 20 and 21, wound oppositely on a winch 24 on the frame 1, passed over pulleys 23 and 22 and wound oppositely on drum 19 rotatable about shaft 15 which drives a gear train 28 and gear sector 29 driving a pair of cranks 26 connected by levers 25 and 27 to the buckets 12 and 13.
