Abstract
Organohalosilanes are prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon halide and the silicon component of a powdered mass obtained by comminuting an alloy comprising silicon and a metallic catalyst for the reaction to a particle size, wherein the distribution by weight and the particle size are as follows: 50 to 100 per cent of the particles are from 74 to 105 microns in diameter, less than 15 per cent are smaller than 44 microns in diameter and at least 95 per cent are smaller than 149 microns in diameter. Best results are obtained if from 90 to 100 per cent of the particles have a diameter from 74 to 105 microns and 100 per cent of the particles have a diameter smaller than 420 microns. Organohalosilanes which may be prepared are alkyl chlorosilanes and bromosilanes, aryl chlorosilanes and bromosilanes and alkylaryl chlorosilanes and bromosilanes. Suitable metals for forming alloys are copper, nickel, tin, antimony, manganese, silver or titanium. In examples, methyl chloride is reacted with heated copper silicon masses falling within the above definition to yield dimethyldichlorosilane, methyltrichlorosilane and methyldichlorosilane.
