Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0627549/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl radicle and the X's are either three chlorine or three bromine atoms are obtained by treating the correspondingly substituted carbinol with phosphorus pentachloride. Substituents instanced for the phenyl radicle are halogens, nitro and cyano. The compounds are insecticides and for their uses (see Groups VI and VIII). In examples: (1) a -(p-chloro-phenyl); (2) a -(p-fluorophenyl)-; (3) a -phenyl-; (5) a -(p-tolyl)-, and (5) a -(p-anisyl)-a : b : b : b -tetrachloroethane and (4) a -phenyl-a -chloro-b : b : b -tribromoethane are prepared by treating the correspondingly substituted a -phenyl - a - hydroxy - b : b : b - trihaloethane in ethereal suspension with phosphorus pentachloride in ether at temperatures below 25 DEG C. For the preparation of these compounds (see Group IV(b). The compounds may be used in the solid form admixed with such diluents as cork, wood flour, chalk, bentonite, kieselguhr, bole or talc, or in liquid solutions with e.g. hydrocarbon oils boiling within the kerosene range or in liquids boiling below room temperature, or in aqueous dispersions or emulsions. Other fungicides, bactericides, insecticides with spreaders and stickers or crytallization preventing compounds may be present. The compounds may be used in fumigants, paints, furniture waxes and creams and in soaps or other detergent or toilet or cosmetic preparations. In examples the following compositions are prepared: (7) talcum powder and a-(p-chlorophenyl)-a : b : b : b -tetrachlorethane, (8) pumicestone, charcoal or kieselguhr with a-phenyl-a : b : b : b -tetrachloroethane, (9) bole and a-(p-fluorophenyl)-a : b : b : b -tetrachlorethane, (10) magnesia with a-phenyl-a-chloro-b : b : b -tribromoethane and (14) a-phenyl-a : b : b : b -tetrachloroethane with sulphur, talcum, chalk and basic copper acetate; in (11) a 1 per cent solution of a-(p-anisyl)-a : b : b : b -tetrachloroethane is prepared in kerosene, and aqueous emulsions or dispersions or pastes for dilution with water containing conventional emulsifying agents are prepared from a-(p-tolyl)-a : b : b : b -tetrachloroethane and (12) bentonite and (15) chalk, (16), (17), (19) and (20) a-(p-chlorophenyl) - a b : b : b -tetrachloroethane and methyl cyclohexanol with such solvents as toluene, chloroform, butyl acetate or acetone, and (18) a-(p-chlorophenyl)-a : b : b : b -tetrachloroethane and toluene, in (21) a fumigant cartridge is prepared containing a(p-chlorophenyl-a : b : b : b -tetrachloroethane and in (13) an aerosol is prepared from the same compound dissolved in cyclohexanone, lubricating oil, sesame oil and difluorodichloromethane.
