Abstract
626,935. Supply systems for X-ray apparatus ; condenser arrangements ; rectifying. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CALDWELL, J. T. Jan. 30, 1946, No. 2997. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] A high-tension generator, for incorporation with an X-ray tube in a pressure-tight tank containing an atmosphere of high dielectric strength, comprises condenser stacks A, B, Figs. 1 and 2, having low voltage input terminals 10, 11 and a rotary switching means 14 for transferring charges to and fro between the stacks and progressively along the stack from the input end to the output terminal 12. The input voltage is unidirectional in the case of Fig. 1 and alternating in the arrangement of Fig. 2, the switch 14 in the latter case being driven in synchronism with the input voltage and also effecting rectification. A smoothing condenser 34 may be provided. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the stacks are so formed and assembled within the tank 20 as to provide a central cylindrical space within which the switch 14 and tube 24 are contained, the switch being driven by an external motor 30 which also drives an internal generator 27 for providing- cathode heating current. A removely controlled reactor 28 connected in the heater circuit is also provided within the tank. The condensers are graded in capacity along each stack, decreasing towards the high potential end. The stacks may be tapped to provide intermediate voltages for a series of accelerating electrodes 35 of the tube, as well as for energizing stress grading members 39, 40 located between the end of the tank and the high potential dome 38 of the stacks.
