Abstract

626,698. Indicating-apparatus. SCHOUTE, C. March 18, 1946, No. 8373. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XX] The apparatus comprises a substantially plane mirror which reflects a parallel light beam on to a circular cylindrical or spherical concave mirror positioned so that the minimum length of the light path between the common and plane mirrors lies between 0.43 and 0.37 times the radius of curvature of the concave mirror, said plane mirror being rotatable about an axis lying in or near the reflecting surface thereof and parallel to the geometrical axis of the cylindrical mirror or perpendicular to the optical axis of the spherical mirror. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft A as of a mirror galvanometer carries a plane mirror directing a parallel light beam on to a concave circular cylindrical mirror E. The light from this mirror converges to a line B and it is shown in the Specification that, for angular displacements of the plane mirror through approximately 70 degrees, the locus of the line images B is a plane surface; a plane scale 5 can thus be employed, this scale being disposed parallel to the axis of the shaft and orthogonal to the plane containing the shaft axis and the geometrical axis of the cylindrical mirror E. A plane mirror may be interposed between the rotating mirror and the concave mirror to reduce the size of the apparatus, and thus in the form shown in Fig. 5, parallel light from a source 3 is directed from a rotating plane mirror 2 of a galvanometer on to a concave circular cylindrical mirror 6 via a plane mirror 5, the concave mirror returning the light to mirror 5 so that it is reflected to a plane scale 7 mounted at 8 in a housing 1 containing the galvanometer. In another embodiment, the concave mirror is spherical and receives light from several plane mirrors in turn, these mirrors being arranged in the form of a polygon and being coupled to a shaft so as to rotate therewith ; the light from the spherical mirror converges to a point and so a succession of light spots can be made to scan a substantially straight line in a plane surface.
