Abstract

A resin-pigment composition comprises discrete particles of an intimate dispersion of a pigment in a resin which is soluble and non-softening at normal temperatures, the amount of resin being at least equal to the critical amount for said pigment. The " critical amount of resin " is that percentage weight of the resin calculated on the total weight of resin and pigment which, with a composition reduced to the form of discrete particles will show a satisfactory and full colour development on hand-stirring in less than ten minutes. Preferably the discrete particles are from 40 to 200 and advantageously 50 to 140 mesh per linear inch. An anti-bonding agent, i.e. a substance which prevents the resin-pigment particles sticking together, may be present preferably in from 5 to 10 per cent by weight of the discrete particles. The resin-pigment composition may be prepared by mixing the resin and pigment in the above amounts under conditions of shear and at an elevated temperature such that the resin can undergo plastic flow and continuing to mix until all the pigment particles have become intimately dispersed and coated by the resin. The mixing may be effected by milling the resin and pigment between a hot and a cold roller. The ratio of resin to pigment may vary from 9 to 1 down to 2 to 8 as the average particle size of the pigment increases from 0.1 to 0.5 microns. Specified pigments are Toluidine Red, Monastral Blue, Lampblack, Prussian Blue, Red Iron Oxide, Ferrite Yellow, Light Chrome Green and Chrome Yellow. Specified resins are a pentaerythritol ester of a rosin-maleic anhydride addition product, a polymerized hydrocarbon product (" Velsicol," Registered Trade Mark), ester gum and Congo ester. The resin pigment composition may be incorporated in coating compositions.ALSO:Pigments coated with resins (see Group III) are incorporated in enamels such as an alkyd varnish containing 21 per cent by weight of phthalic anhydride and 29 per cent by weight of a vegetable oil composed of equal parts of linseed oil and alkali refined soya bean oil, or in oleo-resinous varnishes such as a pentaerythritol ester of rosin in dehydrated castor oil.
