Abstract

625,627. Making magnetizable bodies. GAUT, G. C., MOORE, N. C., and PLESSEY CO., Ltd. Aug. 6, 1947, No. 21337. Drawings to Specification. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetizable body is formed by compressing together face-to-face, flakes of ferromagnetic material which thereby cohere whether or not a binder is present. Such a body may be used as a core for power or audiofrequency chokes and transformers. A ferromagnetic powder, e.g. of oxide, electrolyticsilicon-, or nickel-iron, of appropriate size selected by screening, is dropped from a hopper on to a vibratory or other feed-shoot which feeds it through rollers by which it is flattened into flakes. The flakes may be annealed and re-rolled several times. A final anneal at 900‹ C..for one to two hours in cracked ammonia or hydrogen is given after mixing the flakes with silica, fused magnesia, zirconia, alumina, thoria or kaolin which prevent sintering together of the flakes, and is fed to mixing conveyer by another shoot. After annealing, the magnetic flakes are separated from the other material in a magnetic separator or a weight classifier, given an oxide coating at 200-250‹ C. in air, and compressed at 15-30 tons/sq. inch in the manner described in Specification 589,863. Before compression a lubricant such as stearic acid in ether may be added. The compressed body may be impregnated with wax or a synthetic resin; e.g. chlorinated naphthalene wax at 150-160‹ C. and varnished, e.g. with phenol formaldehyde type varnish.
