Abstract

625,390. Metal Heating furnaces. FOX & CO., Ltd., S., and ASHTON, G. W. July 28, 1947, No. 20300. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] In apparatus for the heat treatment of continuous lengths of metal comprising an elongated gas-tight muffle or furnace tube, within which a non-oxidising atmosphere is maintained, extending through a furnace chamber, the tube 20 is made of mild steel which softens.at the working temperature, is welded to an end cover 24a, rests freely on the flat bed 11 of the furnace and on supports 31 in a surrounding sleeve 30 on the inlet side, and is supported internally by channel-shaped blocks 21, 22 of heat resisting steel or refractory material, forming in effect a series of tube lining sections. A metal cover closing the entrance to the tube 20, Fig. 2 (not shown) is formed with a slot for the passage of the metal and upper and lower sealing pads clamped to it engage the metal surfaces. The tube 20 and sleeve 30 are joined at their'ends by a leather bellows allowing free expansion or contraction of the former, which also is subject to a longitudinal tension applied by means of a cable and weights. At the discharge end of the furnace a water-jacketed tube 40, through which the non- oxidising gas, e.g. cracked ammonia, is supplied, is secured in a gas tight manner to the end cover 24c and to a flange 15 on the furnace casing, non-oxidising gas, e.g. burnt ammonia, being also supplied within the furnace chamber.
