Abstract
624,800. Sinks. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HULBERT, C. LACY-. May 1, 1947, No. 11679. [Class 26] [Also in Group XXIII] In a combined kitchen sink and dishwasher a valve in the sink outlet pipe communicates alternatively with a drain pipe, with a water supply, or an external pump for circulating liquid contained in the sink. As shown in Fig. 3, the outlet pipe 24 of the sink body 10 is connected to a valve 25, other connections to the valve being a water supply pipe 26, a drain pipe 27, and a pipe 28 connected to a power-driven pump 29. The pump is connected by a delivery pipe 31 to a tubular passage 21 around the sink body 10. Liquid from the pump 29 is directed horizontally or downwards from holes 20 connecting the tubular passage 21 to the longer sides of the sink body, and upwards from holes 18 at the ends of the sink on to corrugations 19 of a cover 13. The lug 12 on the cover is hinged to a flange 11 on the sink body 10. A fastener 17 retains the cover in its closed position. Water-tightness between the cover 13 and the sink 10 is effected by the cover lip 16 and soft packing fitted in the continuous recess 15. The valve 25, Fig. 4, is of the rotating plug type with a diametric port 34 and an L-shaped port 35, all the port openings being in the same plane. In use the sink is filled to the required level with hot water, either from a tap above the sink or alternatively either from a pipe 26 through the valve 25 to the sink outlet 24 or from the pipe 26 through 'the pump 29 to the tubular passage and sink with the valve in position C or D respectively. With the cover closed and the valve in position A, shown in Fig. 4, water is circulated from the sink, through the pump into the tubular passage 21 and is forced through openings into the sink. After a sufficient period of circulation the valve is moved into position B, which connects the sink outlet pipe 24 to the drain pipe 27 and 'the sink is emptied. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the openings 20 in the longer side of the sink 10 and the openings 18 at one end are horizontal and direct the liquid on to vanes fitted to the outside of a basket freely rotatable on a spindle in the centre of the sink and so cause the basket to rotate. Articles to be cleaned are placed within the basket. In an alternative form of construction shown in Fig. 5, the cover is of hollow construction, the lower wall having a number of nozzle-shaped openings 44. Also fitted to 'the lower wall are one or more tubular fittings 59 on each of which is rotatably mounted a tubular arm 60 having a bent end 61 so that discharging liquid will cause it to rotate An opening 53 in the hollow cover registers with an opening 52 in the tubular passage 48 fitted around the sink. One or both of these openings may be provided with a grommet. A bracket 58 on the cover is hinged to a lug 55 on the sink body by a link 56 to enable the fitting 52, 53 to separate when the cover is raised. In this construction the holes 51 between the sink body 10 and the tubular orifice 48 are directed downwards. A heater for raising the temperature of the incoming water may be provided between the valve 25 and the pump 29. The pump motor may also drive a valve shaft through a reduction gear and operate the valve 25 automatically so that it moves in succession to positions A, B and either C or D, Fig. 4. The valve need not be directly driven by the valve shaft but may be operated by cams or similar devices.
