Abstract

624,080. Fluid-pressure servo motor-control systems. VANNI, P. G., ETIENNE, M., WAVRE, J., and FABRIQUE DE BOITES LA CENTRALE. Jan. 7, 1946, No. 624. Convention date, Jan. 10, 1945. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVII] The pressure drop across an adjustable orifice set up by a stream of liquid circulating in a pipe at a speed proportional to engine speed is applied to a pressure responsive device for regulating the fuel delivery, the means adjusting the orifice being connected to the intake air throttle valve. In Fig. 1 fuel is delivered from an engine driven gear pump 3 through an adjustable orifice 6 to an injector pump 1, the control rod 2 of which is actuated by a lever 15 connected to a rod 12 joining the movable walls of two capsules 11, 13, subject to the pressure above and below orifice 6. The rod 2 is moved against a spring 17 contained in a jacket 18 adjustable by means of a screw lever 22 for varying the range of pump delivery, and the orifice 6 is controlled by a lever 24 connected to the air throttle actuating lever 28 through a lever 27 having a pin 26 whose position in a slot 25 in the lever 24 is adjusted by a lever 31 to vary the movement transmission ratio between the air throttle 29 and orifice 6. A safety valve 23 byepasses orifice 6 at unduly high pressures. The liquid delivered by the pump 3 need not necessarily be fuel. In Fig. 2 the fuel is delivered through the variable orifice 46 to a distributer 39 feeding the fuel injectors 40, the pressure above and below the orifice being applied to opposite ends of a spring-pressed piston 50 having a channel 55 allowing fuel to be-returned to the reservoir 36 through pipe 52 and ports 58, controlled by a conical recess 57 in the piston. From the ports 58 the fuel flows through a check valve 60 and pipe 59 to the reservoir, the valve 60 preventing the pressure below the orifice 46 falling below a predetermined value. The air throttle 42 is controlled with the orifice 46 by a lever 45 and during overrunning, with the orifice 46 almost closed and pump speed high, the piston 50 opens ports 61 to return fuel to the reservoir and relieve the pressure above the orifice. The cross-section of the port 57 of the piston 50 is elliptical so that rotation of the piston by a lever 62 connected to the lever 45 controls the flow through the ports 58 to adjust the fuel flow in accordance with supercharger pressure in a supercharged engine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a modification of Fig. 1 in which the valve 6 is not connected to the air throttle valve 29. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
