Abstract

623,856. Washing floors. MENDOZA, M. May 20, 1947, No. 13508. [Class 138(i)] Relates to floor scrubbing machines of the type comprising a wheeled carriage 1 having means 8 for distributing washing liquid adjacent a mechanically-driven scrubbing brush 5 from a tank 16 mounted on the carriage and with an endless wiper band 32 which runs along the floor and between wringing rollers 25, 26, the liquid expressed by the rollers going to a waste tank 17. According to the invention the wiper band 32 is made from yellow buff hide or an equivalent stout hide having a buffed surface on one or both sides, the ends being joined to form an endless band. The carriage 1 is mounted on wheels 3, 4, the brush 5 being driven from the wheels 3 by means of gearing and connecting links 11 which reciprocate a cross-bar 9 to which the brush is connected. The crossbar 9 is connected to rods 7 which slide in bearings 6 on the machine frame 1. Liquid from the tank 16 is distributed over the brush 5 by the perforated pipe 8 which is fed from the tank 16 through a cock 20, which is connected by a cable to manipulatory means on a handle by which the machine is moved. The band 32 is carried by four rollers 21-24, and is arranged to sag between the lower rollers 23, 24 forming a bight 32a in contact with the floor The lower rollers may be adjustably mounted but are arranged so that they do not press the band on the floor. To keep the band in position laterally guide strips 33 are used. The upper part of the band passes between the two spring-pressed wringing rollers 25, 26, the upper of which is chain-driven from the rear wheels 4. The wiper band 32 is driven from the rear wheels 4 through a free wheel so that the bight 32a travels in the same direction as the machine at about 1¢ times the machine speed so that it wipes the floor. The band is made from " yellow buff hide," the buffed side absorbing the liquid. The ends are joined by skiving and lap joining fixed with cement and stitching or a butt join with wire or leather lacing or staples or hooks may be used. It has a series of transverse rows of perforations to allow liquid expressed by the wringing rollers to run through. The forward upper band roller 21 may be mounted higher than the rear roller 22 or the wringing rollers may be positioned so that the band is depressed. The lower rollers 23, 24 may be closer spaced than the upper rollers 21, 22. Underneath the wringing rollers 25, 26, a catchment tray 30 is provided which drains into the removable tank 17. In a modification the brush 5, the band 32 and the wringing rollers 25, 26 are driven by an electric motor. The Provisional Specification states that a pair of inwardly and downwardly converging squeegees may be mounted between the brush and the band.
