[Class 94(i)] A method for securing articles such as sausages in a unitary package which includes a supporting strip 1 with abutting articles 3 tangentially secured thereto comprises the feeding of a strip towards a securing zone, securing a second strip 2 thereto, feeding the strips forwardly and the insertion of one of the articles between the strips, moving the strips and article forwardly and sealing the strips together about the article, moving the strips and article to provide space for securing the next article, and so on. In the construction shown, the strips 1, 2 are fed from a platform 12 on to a roller 9 having a compressible surface 11. A head 14 having a heating element 20 and perforating teeth 16 may be lowered into engagement with the strips 1, 2 against the roller 11 by means of a handle &c., (not shown), connected to the head 14 by a rod 23 and links 24. A casing 25 completely surrounds the head 14 and is in slotted engagement with the rod 23. Springs, (not shown), act between the rod 23 and the casing to urge the casing into a normal position which covers the perforating teeth 18. When the head 14 is pressed against the strips 1, 2 the teeth 18 move downwardly relative to the casing 25, and the strips which are coated with heat-responsive adhesive are sealed and perforated. Alternatively, the strips may be secured by other means such as staples. The strips may be of different widths and may be at least as wide as the articles. The strips may be of differing degrees of rigidity, for example the lower strip 1 may be of cardboard and the upper strip 2 may be relatively flexible. The perforations may alternatively be dispensed with or may be replaced by marginal notches capable of intiating tearing.
