Abstract

622,263. Thread-advancing reels &c. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1946, No. 37370. Convention date, Dec. 29. 1945. [Class 120 (ii)] A thread-advancing reel &c, which conveys thread carried in convolutions thereabout, comprises a first set of longitudinally extending bars rotatable about an axis, a second set of bars interdigitating with those of the first set mounted for rotation about an axis displaced from that of the first set, and means interdigitating with the bars of both sets for moving the thread relative to those bars in a direction comprising a component parallel to the axis of the reel &c. The reel may comprise bars 3 rotated about'the axis of,a fixed shaft 2 by a gear 12 and web 8, pins 32, engaging in recesses 33 of the flange 7, driving a flange 14 to which bars 4, interdigitating with the bars 3, are attached. The flange 14 rotates on an eccentric bearing surface 15 keyed at 16 to the fixed shaft 2. A third set of bars 5, interdigitating with sets 3 and 4, are driven by pins 30 which extend into recesses 31 in the flange 14, the bars 5 being carried by rigid elements 17 held in contact with bearing elements 18, 19 on eccentric bearing surfaces 23, 24, attached to the shaft 2; by garter springs 28, 29. The elements 17 are guided for sliding movement by lugs 27 on an annular plate 26 rotating with the bearing elements 18, 19. The eccentricity of the bearing 15 is disposed at about 90‹ to that of the bearings 23, 24, the bearing 24 having the greater eccentricity. Sealing membranes 34, 36 are secured to the reel to prevent treating fluids from reaching the bearing surfaces. In a modification, Fig. 3, the bars 3a are carried by a member 43 rotated by a shaft 40 whereas the bars 4a, 5a are carried by a member 45a. The bars 4a are rigid but the bars 5a are flexibly connected at 5a<SP>1</SP> to the end 46a of the member 45a. The bars 4a are attached to a flange 48 rotating on an eccentric bearing surface 51. The bars 5a, which are spring-biased outwardly, contact a cam surface 55 fixed to the stationary bearing 42. A sealing membrane 56, through which the bars 5a slidingly extend, may be included to keep treating fluids from the bearings. In still further modifications, the cam surface 55 may be replaced by a cam groove and the short flexible connections 5a<SP>1</SP> may be varied by attaching the bars 5a to a hub member secured to the shaft 40. The springiness of the arms 5a may be such that they only come into operation to support the thread, by centrifugal action, at a certain speed of rotation of the reel.
