Abstract

621,442. Wheels for vehicles. FORD, R. C. Feb. 26, 1947, No. 5518. [Class 144 (i)] A spoked wheel comprises a hub having a plurality of undercut slots formed in its periphery and a plurality of spoke members so arranged that adjacent inner ends of the spoke members are both secured in position in one slot by locking means. A bossed hub member 1 and a co-operating ring hub member 2 are provided with transverse peripheral slots 5 arranged to form closed slots when the two members 1, 2 abut together. The closed slots register with transverse through holes 4 in the two hub members, each slotted hole forming a housing for the ends of adjacent spoke members. The spoke members, which are formed from sheet metal, are U-shaped with a narrow rim abutting portion 6 and curved ends 9 to conform with the holes 4, the radial portions 8 being swaged as at 11 for strength. Pins or rivets 10 may be used to secure adjacent spoke ends 9 in each slotted hole 4 and the portions 6 may be welded to a rim 7, said portions 6 being curved to conform with the curvature of the rim. The rim 7 may be channelled in section to position the spoke members laterally. The assembled hub 1, 2 may be cut away as at 12 for lightening purposes, or alternatively each of the members 1, 2 may be formed with blind transverse holes between the through holes 4, which form closed lightening pockets when the hub members are assembled.
