Abstract
620,930. Commutators for dynamo-electric machines. SMITH, A. H., and SMITH, A. M. Feb. 3, 1947, No. 3151. [Class 35] A commutator in which the bars are embedded in moulded insulating material employs a metal ring which is first folded as in Fig. 1 and then, ih sequential operations, (1) pressed to form external angular depressions B3 and internal recesses with flat bottoms B4, (2) after annealing, perforated along the roots of the external depressions, the extruded metal forming either a single arc or one or more projections of other shape such as angularly disposed legs, both being shown in Fig. 4, and (3) further pressing to contract the ring, Fig. 5, so that the depressions B3 are closed up entirely and the internal recesses become parallel-sided as at B5. After cleaning, the ring, with a knurled or splined central ring to fit a shaft, is moulded under heat and pressure with insulating material. Subsequently, the surplus metal is turned off to separate the commutator bars, and an end flange may be formed and slit or drilled for armature connections.
