Abstract

A liquid multiple vitamin preparation is made by forming a physically stable aqueous solution of water-soluble vitamins, including ascorbic acid and a thiamine salt; forming a chemically or physically stable solution of one or more oil-soluble vitamins in an oily vehicle; dispersing the second solution in the physically stable aqueous solution; and adding in a predominating proportion a viscous vehicle consisting of either corn syrup or a combination of a water dispersable gum such as acacia, tragacanth, locust bean gum, or dextrin with one or more of the polyhydroxy compounds glycerol, propylene glycol, sorbitol, maltone, sucrose or glucose. Specified oil-soluble vitamins are vitamins A and D. The oily vehicle may also comprise sesame oil and may be emulsified with an aqueous solution of higher alkyl sulphates and sulphonates. The aqueous solution may also comprise riboflavin, nicotinamide, benzoic acid and methyl parahydroxy benzoate. Other specified additions are vitamins E and K, and the preparation may be flavoured with alcoholic oil of orange. The various steps in the preparation may be effected under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Preferably, the preparation should have a pH. of 3 or not above 4.
