620,548. Sewing-machines. AUSTLID, A. Jan. 22, 1947, No. 1980. Convention date, Jan. 22, 1946. [Class 112] Needles, vi'brating laterally. The needle-bar 3 and loop-taker shaft 4 are carried by a bail 6 adapted to be reciprocated longitudinally of the machine. In the embodiment shown means are provided for adjusting the amplitude. and midpoint of the vibration. The reciprocation of the bail 6 is produced by a link 11 which is pivoted to the bail and carries a roller engaging a track in an angularly-adjustable guide member 15, the link being oscillated by a crank 8 and having an endwise movement imparted to it by reason of the inclination of the guide 15. The middle part of the guide track is made arcuate, with a radius equal to the length of the link 11, so that when the guide is in its neutral position, for a straight seam, the bail is absolutely stationary ; the end portions of the track are of different curvature, to minimise the lateral movement of the needle while it is in the work during zig-zag stitching, and they may be somewhat enlarged. The guide 15 is carried by a spindle with an adjusting knob, and this spindle is mounted in an eccentric bushing in the machine frame, angular adjustment of the bushing thus providing lateral adjustment of the neutral position of the bail 6.
