Abstract

618,764. Fluid bearings. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Nov. 17, 1944, No. 22869. Convention date, March 10. [Class 12 (i)] A horizontally moving table as of a machine tool has bearing portions which are located between vertically spaced parallel fixed bearing surfaces and are supported by lubricating liquid introduced under pressure between the bearing portions of the table and the fixed bearing surfaces, the total thrust being varied as the clearances between the bearing surfaces alter. As shown in the transverse sectional view, Fig. 3, the table 11 of a precision grinding machine is supported on a bed 10 by table bearing-portions 20, 19 which slide on the ways 18, 17 and are located below overhanging gib portions 22, 21. Oil supplied under pressure by a pump 100 passes by ducts 26, 25 to the bearing surfaces and passes thence by the small clearances formed below appropriate lands to intermediate pressure spaces and to drainage. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing the arrangement for the table bearing portion 20. Oil at pump pressure is supplied to the bottom recess 2 (by duct 26, Fig. 3) and passes at the same pressure to side recesses 7 by internal ducts 32, 33, Fig. 2. The faces of the table bearing portion 20 are provided with the intermediate-pressure spaces 4, 9, b, d, Fig. 2, which intercommunicate by internal ducts, Figs. 8, 9; the oil passes by the throttling clearances 3, 8 to the intermediate pressure spaces 4, 9 so setting up an intermediate pressure in the spaces 4, 9, b, d with the oil draining from these spaces 4, 9, b, d through the throttling clearances 5, 10, a, c to the drains 28, 27, 29, 28. The resistances of the throttling clearances are designed by appropriate dimensioning of the widths and lengths of the lands so that the resultant total thrust balances the weight of the table. If the table is displaced downwardly, upwardly, or sidewise, the clearances alter and cause a compensating thrust to arise. The pressure oil may equally well be introduced at the upper face of the table bearing-portion, Fig. 11 (not shown).
