Abstract

Compounds which may be used as pourpoint depressants and viscosity index improvers in lubricating oils are prepared by copolymerizing a mixture of alkyl acrylates, the alkyl groups containing 10 to 18 C atoms and the average in the mixture being from 11.0 to 13.5 C atoms. Commercial mixtures of alcohols may be used to prepare the mixed acrylates, one such mixture containing lauryl, decyl, octadecyl, cetyl and tetradecyl alcohols. A mixture of decyl and lauryl acrylates may also be used. Specification 491,800, [Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:A mixture of two different alkyl acrylates containing from 10 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups are copolymerized, the acrylates being so selected that the alkyl groups in the mixture have an average number of carbon atoms of 11.0 to 13.5. Commercial mixtures of alcohols may be used to prepare the mixed acrylates, one such mixture containing lauryl, decyl, octadecyl, cetyl and tetradecyl alcohols. A mixture of decyl and lauryl acrylates is also specified. Bulk or solution methods are specified, the solvents named being toluene, heptane, refined petroleum naphtha, refined kerosene, gas oil, lubricating oil, methanol, isopropanol and ethyl ether. Benzoyl or acetyl peroxides or tertiary butyl hydroperoxide may be used as catalysts. A range of 50-100 DEG C. is given as the reaction temperatures, while the absence of oxygen is preferred. The copolymers are useful as pour point depressants alone or with others such as methacrylate polymers, and viscosity index improvers for lubricating oils, for improving waxes, asphalt, greases, resins, gums and rubbers and in making hydraulic oil compositions.
