[Class 117] A machine for removing dust and contraries from waste paper comprises a casing 1 with a chute 2 through which waste paper and contraries are delivered into the upper end of a rotating perforated drum 3. The mixture is agitated by beater ribs 11, or rows of spikes and the dust is drawn through the perforations by a fan 12 into a duct 13. The waste paper and heavier contraries falling from the lower end of the drum are acted upon by a stream of air from a blower 14, which blows the paper through an opening 15 on to a conveyor 16. Heavier objects such as metal, paper clips, string, tins &c., fall into a well or sump 17 from which they can be removed by a rake through an opening covered by a flap 18. Alternatively the well or sump 17 may accommodate a slidable box or equivalent which can be withdrawn through the opening. One or more rotatable or fixed rods may be fitted detachably in the lower part of the casing to separate string, rag &c., which may be carried with the paper towards the exit 15. According to the Provisional Specification, the fan 12 is driven by a spindle having a cog which meshes with a toothed ring 10 on the cylinder; doors are provided at the front and rear ends of the upper part of the chamber, and have trip switches to cut off the driving current when the doors are opened. In addition, the heavy contraries are removed through an opening in the floor covered by a " roll-top-desk " type of cover running in lateral grooves on either edge of the opening and continuing up one side of the casing. The cover is weighted to keep it closed, but may be opened by pushing against it a box, mounted on a trolley, which box slides in guides parallel with the edges of the roll.
