Abstract
617,785. Gravity switches. BROWNING, R. O. June 11, 1946, No. 17406. Convention date, June 16, 1945. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XX] A pair of gravity switches is mounted on a pendulum forming part of a sextant or like instrument to control an electric circuit whereby the motion of the pendulum relative to the instrument is arrested or its position recorded when passing through the vertical. As shown, each switch comprises a housing 107 containing a fluid 111 such as mercury on which is supported a conductor 112 having projections 113, 114. The projection 114 is pivotally engaged by a rod 116 and the projection 113 is adapted to contact a rod 108 when the switch is horizontal or tilted towards the rod. In the form shown, the contact is made by the switch between the leads 102 and 103 connected to the rod 108 and the mercury. In another.form, the contact is made between the rods 108 and 116, the latter being connected to a mounting strap 128. The two switches are mounted on the pendulum bob in opposite directions and connected in series. Another pair of switches may be arranged on the bob at right angles to the first and connected in series with them to ensure that the sextant reading is taken when the pendulum is in a true vertical position.
