Abstract

615,888. Detecting faults. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., DARKE, L., and TITLEY, C. O. Sept. 25, 1944, No. 18271. [Class 37] Short-circuited turns in an electrical coil are detected by arranging the coil in a series resonant circuit fed from a high - frequency source to provide a sensitive state in which the effect of a short-circuit will be great. In Fig. 1, coil L2 forms the grid circuit of a valve T, the anode of which is connected to earth through a coil L1 under test in series with a condenser C. An indicator 1 is connected to a coupling coil L4 which is held near the end of the coil under test L1. Coils L2, L1 have a slight magnetic coupling which is adjusted so that, with a standard coil in position L1, a stable oscillation is obtained as shown by indicator 1. The coil under test is substituted for standard L1 when any short-circuited turns will prevent oscillation. In a modification, Fig. 2, the coil L1 under test is connected in series with a condenser C, across the output of a separate oscillator connected at AA. The oscillator is adjustable as to frequency and amplitude, the output being measured by voltmeter V. Indicator 1 is connected to coupling coil L4. The oscillator is tuned to the resonant frequency of L1, C, with a standard coil in position L1. The reading of indicator 1 is noted with the oscillator voltage V adjusted to some arbitrary level. The coils under test are substituted for the standard coil LI, and any short-circuited turns cause a drop in the reading on indicator 1.
