Abstract

614,255. Lenses and other optical elements. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 28, 1946, No. 19382. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1939. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group V] Lenses or other optical elements are made from material gelatinised from a solution and dried; the element may be hardened. The element may be a correcting element 9, Fig. 3, for use in correcting spherical aberration in a reflecting objective, and may be formed from a colloidal solution of gelatin, agar-agar, pectin, &c., or of silicates or aluminium oxide with or without glycerine. The solution may be passed through a tube 6 on to a plate 2 beneath a hollow mould 3 maintained by water circulating through pipes 4, 5, at a temperature such that the material remains in solution. Gradual reduction of temperature gelatinises the solution and produces a mass 7. The mass is dried and its heights become reduced as shown in Fig. 3, while its dimensions parallel to the plate remain the same. The enlargements existing in the mould of the desired heights in the element enable greater accuracy to be obtained in the finished element. Hardening may be effected by formalin &c.
