Abstract
613,862. Radiolocation waveguides. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Feb. 20, 1946, No. 5346. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1945. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vii)] In a radiolocation system for visibly presenting a scene, the received reflected radio waves are made to form a real image of the scene which is scanned by a pick-up device scanning over a predetermined path in the plane of the image, and the signals derived from the pick-up device are applied to a recorder driven in synchronism with the pick-- up device. The scene is illuminated by radio waves, either by flood-lighting or by a scanning beam, reflected waves being focussed by the mirror 10 on to a crystal detector or waveguide orifice 11. The received signals are amplified and applied to a recording stylus 18 which scans the drum 16 driven by motor 17 helically. The recording system is coupled to the receiving system by means of a pin 23 which causes the pick-up device 11 to scan horizontally once per revolution of the drum and by means of the link 26 which positions the mirror 10 in accordance with the position of the stylus 18. A representation of the scene is formed upon current sensitive paper wrapped around the drum 16. In a pulsed system, a common transmitting and receiving aerial system may be used, and also the receiver may be " gated " so that only objects within a certain range will be presented. In another embodiment for use in an aircraft, an image of the scene is focussed by a lens on to a waveguide orifice which itself scans in one dimension only, scanning in the other dimension being performed by the motion of the aircraft. Reproduction is carried out upon a sheet of sensitive paper which is moved at a speed proportional to that of the aircraft so that a map of the route covered is produced. Waveguides. Fig. 3a illustrates a waveguide joint for use in the embodiment of Fig. 1 so that the waveguide orifice 11 may be able to perform its scanning motion. Plugs 66, 67 provide " steps " which are used to match the rectangular waveguide portions to the circular portions of the joint. Slot 68 and spacing 69 act as a choke to prevent leakage from the joint.
