Abstract

613,631. Wheel scrapers. CARLTON, W. C. June 21, 1946, No. 18701. [Class 108 (ii)] In apparatus for protecting the tyres of motor vehicles comprising an extractor or deflector blade 12, or a plurality of such blades, set in operative relation to the tyre surface, each blade is mounted upon a carrier 2 and secured thereto by means 11 which are arranged automatically to release the blade from its mounting and so permit the blade to be discarded when the blade becomes worn to a predetermined degree. The blade 12 is supported by a frame comprising longitudinal arms 1 and transverse arms 2, 3, the whole being pivotally connected by bolts 4 to lugs 6 on a tubular bracket 7 secured to the vehicle frame by set bolts 14a. The member 3 is spring supported on a tongue 17 protruding from the bracket 7, and can be adjusted about the pivotal axis defined by the bolts 4 by means of a wing nut and bolt 21, 24. The blade 12 is secured to the member 2 by rivets 11 having countersunk heads which lie flush with the undersurface of the blade. These heads wear with the blade and when they are completely worn away the blade falls from the carrier and is flung away by the rotating tyre. In a modification, Fig. 5, the rivet 20 has a flat head 24 received in a counterbored hole 21 in the carrier 2, and a countersunk head 25 received by the blade 12. When the head 25 is sufficiently worn a compression spring 22 withdraws the rivet and allows the blade to be discarded. The fastening means are preferably of a soft material, such as copper or aluminium, and may instead of rivets comprise nuts and bolts, studs, staples or clips, or welded or brazed joints adapted to wear with the blade. The blade itself may be in several sections each independently secured to the member 2 and be made of a material having an elongation characteristic, under tensile test, of less than 20 per cent. The arms may be made of a similar material, to allow them to snap under excessive load. Means, such as electrical spring contacts, may be provided to give audible or visible warning when a blade has been discarded. Specification 578,851 is referred to.
