Abstract

612,619. Recording-apparatus. KAPELLA, Ltd., and REASON, R. E. March 4, 1946, Nos. 6678, 20782 and 29221. [Class 106 (iv)] Recording - apparatus wherein a two - coordinate record is made on a travelling-sheet is such that the part of the record surface which is co-operating with a marking element during recording is curved cylindrically and concavely about the axis of oscillation of the marking element. Figs. 1 and 2 show an electrically-operated recording-apparatus wherein a penarm C is carried by spring ligaments C<1> secured to a coil B<1> whose pivots B<2> are connected by spiral springs B3 to a non-magnetic frame B' fixed to a magnet A having a soft iron core B between its poles embossed by the coil B<1> so that the pen arm C oscillates with the coil about its axis X-X, but has free vertical play. A flexible recording strip D is drawn from a supply spool D<1>, round a roller D<2>, and through a guide D<3> by a sprocket D<4>, electrically driven, the guide D<3> being cylindrically curved about the axis X-X so that the record strip is so flexed where it co-operates with the pen C. One element bounding the guide may be resilient or the strip may be urged against a plate by spring- operated plungers. The strip may be visible from above throughout its length or it may be partly covered. The pen arm may oscillate about a vertical axis and the strip move vertically where it contacts the pen. As shown in Fig. 3, the pen may be mounted on a vertical ligament C<2> and it may be bent forward at an angle, the lower end being bent down normal to the record surface. The pen arm may be driven in accordance with pressure as in a Bowdon gauge or in accordance with a temperature responsive element instead of electrically. Marking action. Marking may be by ink, pencil or scribing on paper or by electrical methods. Where marking is by ink a hollow pen arm C<3> is fed by induction from a reservoir whose liquid level is approximately that of the median plane Y-Y, the end C<5> of the feedpipe and the end C<6> of the pen arm being equidistant above and below the axis X-X and joined by a looped flexible rubber tube C<7>. As shown in Fig. 7, where marking is by ink, the rubber interconnection biasses the pen arm E toward the record strip, its tension being adjustable by means of a screw E<7> and the level of the reservoir being adjustable by means of a screw E<9>. Safety-devices. A device for preventing damage to the pen is shown in Fig. 3, wherein a lever H pivoted at H<3> is biassed by a spring H' to hold the pen clear of the strip unless a solenoid H<5> is energized by the closing of the circuit to the electric motor which drives the sprocket D'. Alternative means are shown in Fig. 10, wherein a spring-loaded plunger J frictionally engages the record strip and moves forward with the strip to close a contact to cause the pen to co-operate with the strip and moves backward with the strip to close another contact to cause the pen to lift away from the strip.
