Abstract
612,453. Dish-washing machines. LAIRD, J. R. May 23, 1946, No. 15722. [Class 138 (i)] A dish-washing machine includes a washing chamber 1 having an outlet pipe 2 and fitted at one end with a hinged door 3 adapted to be opened to a position in which it is co-planar with the bottom of the chamber, a carriage 6 adapted to be loaded with the dishes to be washed and accommodated normally in the chamber, a wash-water tank 8 incorporating a heater 9, a motor-driven pump 11, the inlet port 12 of which is connectible to the tank, a plurality of spray pipes 20 disposed along the sides of the chamber and connected to the delivery port 18 of the pump, a plurality of carrier elements 24 for plates and saucers, each pivoted on a vertical pivot 25 to the floor of the carriage, at least one removable tray 32 for cups and the like mounted in the carriage, the carrier elements and tray being connectible to reciprocating means, whereby the carriers are oscillated around their pivots and the trays are reciprocated, and a hinged panel 35 adapted to close an aperture in one side of the washing machine, and having brackets 38 to hold cutlery. The carriage 6 runs on wheels 7 on ramps on the door and chamber floor. The heater 9 may be an electric immersion heater, and the temperature of the water in the tank may be controlled by a thermostat. The pump 11 may be a centrifugal pump driven by an electric motor 10, and the inlet port 12 is connected to a two-way valve 13 actuated by a lever 17 and communicating through pipes 14, 15 with the tank 8 and a rinse-water tank beneath the chamber respectively. The outlet port 18 communicates with the sprays 20 through a pipe 22 and pipes 19A, 19B, and the water passing to the pipe 19B operates a hydraulic motor 21 to rotate a cam 23. The carrier members 24 each comprise a base-bar and a U-shaped wire guide 27. The reciprocating means comprises rods 28, 33 attached respectively to one end of each base-bar and to the tray 32, and connected by a vertical rod 34 urged by a spring 23A against the cam 23 when the carriage is in the chamber. The tray 32 comprises parallel wires in trough form secured to end plates 31 riding on a bar 30 fixed to the carriage. The cam 23 may be driven by the motor 10. In operation, the tanks are filled, the heater switched on, the elements 24, tray 32 and rack 38 filled, the carriage pushed into the chamber, the door 3 and panel 35 closed, and the motor 10 started, whereupon the reciprocating means operates to expose all parts of the articles to the sprays. The pump is put in communication first with the wash-water tank 8 and then with the rinse-water tank. A timing device may be incorporated in the motor circuit to control the duration of each washing operation and may be arranged to unlatch the door 3 at the . end thereof. According to the Provisional Specification, the panel 35 has a plurality of slits for the introduction of knife blades, the carriage may hold in addition to the plate racks an upper and a lower removable tray for cups and the like and for spoons and forks respectively, and the racks may be oscillated by a pair of rods reciprocated by means of a cam or rotary eccentric acting on one rod against the action of a spring acting on the other rod.
