Abstract

Diphenylamine or nucleus alkylated diphenylamines are prepared by condensing aniline and phenol or aniline and an alkylated phenol or a nucleus alkylated aniline and phenol or an alkylated phenol and a nucleus alkylated aniline, wherein at least one of the reactants is present as its aluminium or magnesium compound, e.g. aluminium phenolate or magnesium anilide. In examples, diphenylamine and 4-methyldiphenylamine are prepared. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the preparation of amines of the general formula R1-NR-R11, wherein R represents hydrogen or an alkyl group and R1 and R11 are benzene nuclei which may carry substituents, by the method given above employing an aromatic nucleus linked monohydric or polyhydric compound and a primary or secondary arylamine. A catalyst such as iodine may be employed to assist the reaction. In additional examples, diphenylamine is prepared by heating aluminium anilide and aluminium phenate in a Carius tube, methyl-N-diphenylamine by reacting aluminium derivatives of phenol and monomethylaniline and N : N1-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine by reacting the aluminium derivatives of aniline and hydroquinone. This subject-matter does not apear in the Specification as accepted.
