Abstract

Magnesium chloride is produced by reacting with chlorine a magnesium-containing mixture, the said mixture being formed by making a uniform suspension of finely-divided magnesium oxide in one or more liquid hydrocarbons and destructively distilling the suspension while agitating (see Group II). The said mixture is reacted with chlorine gas at an elevated temperature, the magnesium chloride formed being drawn off and recovered.ALSO:A process for the production of magnesium-containing mixtures which comprises substantially uniformly admixing finely-divided magnesium oxide with one or more liquid hydrocarbons and subjecting the mixture, while it is maintained as a substantially uniform mixture by agitation or circulation, to destructive distillation to form a carbonised or coked mass having magnesium oxide dispersed therethrough, preferably without attaining conditions under which magnesium oxide is reduced. Finely-divided coking coal or high melting-point pitch may be included in the mixture with a heavy liquid hydrocarbon. The mixture may be initially heated with agitation, the completion of destructive distillation being performed without agitation. The coked mass may be mixed with a further quantity of magnesium oxide and a liquid, liquefiable, or thermoplastic carbonaceous agent, this second mixture being coked, or the said coked mass may be mixed with a binder and heated to coke the binder. Destructive distillation may take place in an inert gas and the products of distillation may be condensed and recovered. The coked mixture may be used in the production of magnesium chloride (see Group III).
