Abstract

610,686. Illuminating-flares. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. April 15, 1946, No. 11472. [Class 9 (ii)] To provide a landing illuminant of prolonged duration, a device having a base 5 has mounted on it equally spaced metal casings 1 to 4, each containing a flare candle 21, each candle being connected to the preceding candle by a length of fuze so that it is ignited when the preceding candle is almost burned through. The base 5 has supporting side flanges 6 and a central raised portion 8 through which the casings project, each casing being provided with a loose cap 20. A metal channel 16 is welded to each of the casings 2 to 4. A short length of fuze 22 is provided at the top of each candle and the base of the candle in casing 1 is connected to the candle in casing 2 by a length of fuze 25 passing through a wooden plug 23 below the said candle and carried underneath the raised portion 8 of the base 5 and along the channel 16 on casing 2 to the top of the candle in said casing 2. In the same way the candle in casing 2 is connected to the candle in casing 3 and that in casing 3 to the candle in casing 4. The base 5 may be filled with clay and when the device is used on grassland a cover may be attached to the base flanges 6, said cover being provided with spikes adapted to enter the ground.
