610,232. Testing surface coatings on strip material. CHATFIELD, H. W. April 2, 1946, No. 10137. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for use in testing and measuring the flexibility and adhesion of surface coatings on metal or other flexible strip material comprises a rod 1 slotted at 3 to receive the end of the strip 2 and around which the strip is wound under tension, the rod having a spiral-shaped contour such that its radius increases uniformly from one edge B of the slot around the rod to the other side A of the slot, and a manually-rotatable handle or automatic means for rotating the rod. The coating on the outer side of strip 2 is thus subjected to a graduallydiminishing stretching force, and is wound on the rod until no further cracks are observed. The strip is tensioned by a weight or by phasing passed between two relatively-adjustable rollers. The apparatus may be enclosed in a thermostatically-controlled casing.
