Abstract

Asphaltic bitumens are prepared from asphaltic mineral oils and the working-up products thereof (which may themselves be bitumenous substances) by treating preferably above 100 DEG C. with up to 5 per cent cyclic compounds containing one or more nitro and/or nitroso groups and also one or more oxygen containing acid groups as nuclear substituents. The treatment may be effected by incorporating the cyclic compound which may previously be dissolved in a suitable solvent or diluent into the initial material which is in liquid form or may be brought into that state by liquefying or dissolving in a suitable solvent. The acid groups other than nitro or nitroso groups comprise OH, SO3H, SO2H, SO2CL, COOH and COCL. There may also be present substituents which need not be directly united to a nucleus such as alkyl, oxyalkyl, aldehyde, keto, amino and iminogroups and halogens. Examples of substances with which the treatment may be carried out are picric acid, dinitrocresol, nitroso phenol, nitrocyclohexyl alcohol, nitro-oxyquinoline, nitrobenzene sulphonic acid, dinitrobenzene sulphonic acid, nitrosolbezene sulphonic acid, nitronapthalene sulphonic acid, nitrobenzene sulpho-chloride, nitrobenzee sulphamide, chlor-nitrobenzene sulphonic acid, nitrobenzoic acid and trinitrobenzryl chloride.
