Abstract

609,956. Gas turbines; jet propulsion plant. LOMBARD, A. A. March 26, 1946, No. 9343. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] A gas turbine or jet propulsion engine is attached to its supporting structure by two mountings arranged at different places along its length, one mounting comprising a linkage system connected to the supporting structure at at least two points and allowing the engine to turn about its axis and the other mounting providing no such freedom. The compressor casing 5, Fig. 4, of a gas turbine jet propulsion unit is attached to the ribs 11 of an aircraft wing by two trunnions 13 disposed at opposite sides of the compressor on a common horizontal axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the engine. The trunnions locate the engine in the horizontal plane, but allow it to rock in the vertical plane. The turbine casing 6, Fig. 2, is attached to the ribs 11 by a pair of struts 20 which are articulated together at 23 and a pair of links 19 which are articulated to the struts 20 at 17 and to two brackets 22 attached to the casing 6. The point 23 is pivotally attached to the casing by a shackle 24 and the pivot points 17 to the ribs 11 by shackles 15. This arrangement allows the turbine casing to turn on its axis relative to the supporting structure so that no torsional loads due to deformation of the structure are imparted to the turbine plant. The shackles 15 are mounted on brackets 16 by pins 26 and the widths of the brackets are less than the free lengths of the pins so that the shackles can slide relative to the brackets to accommodate axial expansion of the engine.
