Abstract

609,513. Statisticalapparatus. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd., and KEEN, H. H. Feb. 22, 1946, No. 5653. [Class 106 (i)] A tabulating machine comprising an accumulator built up from a plurality of plate units is characterised in that each plate unit comprises a plurality of electromagnets, one for each of the different functions to be performed in connection with the accumulator, an interposer operable by each electromagnet, a plurality of sets of contacts, one set related to each electromagnet and each set comprising contacts for each denomination on the plate, a member movable mechanically in each cycle of the machine and adapted to operate a set of contacts when the related electromagnet is energized to operate its interposer. Fig. 1 shows a plate unit comprising two denominations, the operation of which is substantially the same as that described in Specification 533,586, which is referred to. A magnet 34, energized from the card sensing means, releases an arm 24 from locking engagement with one element of a differential gear (not shown) driven through gears 37, 9 and 10 from a constantly rotating shaft, and engages a second arm 25 with a toothed wheel 23 so that the counter rotates in known manner until restoration of the arms 24 and 25 by cam means (not shown) at the " 0 " time in the machine cycle. The counter passes through 0 to 9 three times in one revolution of the shaft 19, and transfer is provided for by a notch 41 and tooth 42 at three positions on. a disc 21. The disc 21 is for addition; a similar disc (not shown) is provided for subtraction. Arms 39 and 57 co-operate with these cam discs and, through an interposer 52, movable to co-operate with one or the other, control contacts 49 ... 51. Contacts 49, 50 are closed when the counter stands at " 9 " and contacts 49, 51 when it stands at " 0." Co-operating with the counter mechanism to perform various functions are electromagnets 2, 2a ... 2c which control the positions of contacts 70, 71 through the medium of a sliding bar 18. A cam-operated lever 36 slides the bar 18 endwise after the " 0 " point in the machine cycle and if one of the magnets 2 ... 2c has been energized its armature 8 has lowered a pivoted vertical interposer 13 so that its lower hooked end is engaged by a similar hook 29 on the bar 18 and, as the bar moves to the right, the interposer pushes a pivoted lever 60 over to transfer its brush 70 from contact 71 to contact 71<1>. In the circuit diagram, Fig. 5, representing two plate units of two denominations each for connection to form an accumulator of four denominations, the magnets 2...2c are used for controlling transfer an amount standing in one accumulator into another accumulator of the machine, the contacts 71b of the first accumulator and the contacts 71<1> of the second accumulator are closed, and also all the contacts 71a. Contacts 102 represent the segments of the read-out commutators and 103, 103n their brushes, so than an emitter 112 sends out impulses representing the number standing in the first accumulator to the magnets 34 of the second accumulator when contacts 70c, 71c are closed. When contacts 70c, 71c<1> are closed, the " nines complement " is transmitted. Specifications 422,135 and 483,021 also are referred to.
