Abstract
608,632. Radiolocation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 27, 1945, No. 32051. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1939. [Class 40 (vii)] A pulse radar system comprises means for radiating the exploring signals successively into differently directed relatively fixed zones, as shown for example in Fig. 2, and means for receiving echo signals and for indicating the zone from which the maximum reflection is obtained. A pulse generator 1 is connected to a transmitter 3 which radiates an exploring signal from an aerial system comprising four directive aerial arrays, each of which comprises a radiator and a reflector dipole. The four arrays are connected sequentially to the transmitter by means of the continuously rotating switch 9 to produce the four directive beams illustrated in Fig. 2. The echo signals are received by the same aerial system and passed to receiver 37 ; alternatively, a separate aerial system for reception may be used. The output of the receiver is taken from a potentiometer 39 to two four-way switches 53, 55 which rotate in synchronism with switch 9 so that the connections to the horizontal deflection plates of the cathode-ray tube are alternately reversed and the electron beam is deflected to the left or to the right according as the radiation beam is to the left or the right of the mean direction of transmission. The output from the receiver is also applied to the vertical deflection plates of the cathode-ray tube, through the high-pass filters 59, 61 and switches 71, 73 so that the electron beam is deflected vertically in accordance with the instantaneous position of the radiation beam. A time-base voltage generated in circuit 27 is applied to the vertical deflection plates of the cathode-ray tube so that indications as shown in Fig. 4 are produced on the screen. Chokes 29 and filters 59, 61 prevent signals from receiver 37 from affecting the timebase circuit 27 and vice versa. By operating the system with switches 63, 65 open, a simpler indication, as shown in Fig. 3, is obtained, having no indication of misalignment in the vertical direction.
