Abstract

Insulation for a joint in polyethylene-insulated cable comprises 150 parts polyethylene; 100 parts polyisobutylene; 40 parts liquid polyisobutylene; 50 parts deproteinized rubber; 0.5 parts antioxidant; 0.05 parts sulphur. It may also comprise equal parts of polyethylene and polyisobutylene, or a mixture of polyethylene and polyisopentene. When an unvulcanized rubber jointing compound is used, the joint is vulcanized. The polyethylene insulation may include up to 20 per cent polyisobutylene.
