Abstract

605,747. Electromagnetically-operated valves. FORMAN, J. Dec. 31, 1945, No. 35312. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVII, XXVIII, XXXV and XXXVI] Reciprocating motion which may be applied to a pump or valve is obtained by the repulsion action of a coil energized by discharging a condenser through it on an adjacent non- magnetic conducting member. The return action may be a spring, a similar repulsion effect, or by a continuously intermittently energized solenoid. In Fig. 2, oil injection is controlled by a needle valve (not shown), or the end of hollow spindle 30 carrying a conducting disc 2 repelled alternately by coils 4, 4<SP>1</SP> and disposed in an enlargement of the oil supply tube 28, 29, the spindle 30 having parts 31 for the passage of oil. Condensers 6, 6<SP>1</SP> are discharged alternately. In Fig. 7, the coil 4 is also movable, sliding in piston 40 on the tube 38 to pump oil entering at 42 through the valve formed by disc 2 which simultaneously moves away from the inner wall of container 43. If the oil entering at 42 is under pressure, this returns the coil or other means are used to return this and the disc. A valve as in Fig. 2 with one coil replaced by a solenoid coil 5<SP>1</SP> . (Fig. 8) co-operating with a magnetic plunger on the valve spindle, may automatically control the amount of fuel with variations of engine load, since the fuel passed will depend on the duration of opening of the valve in turn depending on the extent of the continuous energization of coil 5<SP>1</SP> from the generator 45 driven by the engine, while the resistance 35 is adjusted to act as a throttle control. Resistance 46 may be adjusted in a contrary sense to resistance 35 in circuit of coil 4 through which condenser 6 discharges under the control of tube 47 in turn controlled by a coil 52 in which a voltage impulse is generated at intervals which may depend on the engine speed. The condenser may be charged from a high voltage generator 48. An alternative engine control can be obtained by connecting one end of each of coils 4, 4<SP>1</SP> to a discharge tube, the other terminals of the coils both being connected to a condenser, the capacity of which is varied with engine speed.
