Abstract

605,726. Refrigerator cars. BURGESS, A F. (Dole Refrigerating Co.). Oct. 2, 1945. No. 25589. [Class 29] A refrigerator car comprises an evaporator unit consisting of plates 10 disposed in a casing 9 at the top of an air duct 7 at one end of the car, and a motor driven fan 31 placed in front of the evaporator draws air across the plates and directs the cold air towards the other end of the car. Refrigerant is supplied by a compressor 37 to a condenser 39, and a receiver 40 from which it passes through a heat exchanger 42 and pipe 43 to a strainer 44 and then to an expansion valve 46 which distributes the refrigerant by pipes 47 to evaporator coils contained within the vacuum plates 10, discharge therefrom being to a-header 49 from which it is passed back to the compressor through pipe 50 and the heat exchanger 42. The vacuum plates 10 are constructed of sheet metal and the lower plates of each unit have projecting edges 15 located in slots 25 of supporting members 24, while the refrigerant tubes are sinuously coiled within the plates which are then hermetically sealed to contain an eutectic under a vacuum. The plates 10 are inclined to the horizontal in order to assist the circulation of air which is maintained by the fan 31 driven by a motor 32 supported on a hinged framework 33, 34, 35, which also supports a screen 36 through which the air is passed. Air circulation within the car is effected by a duct 6, positioned below floor members 4 separated by spaces 5, and communicating with the vertical duct 7. The expansion valve is controlled by a thermostatic bulb 53 in the suction line, connected to the valve by a pipe 54.
