604.931. Compound paper; laminated abrasive-containing sheet material. CARBORUNDUM CO. June 26. 1945, No. 16325. Convention date, June 27, 1944. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 96 and 140] Abrasive articles such as grinding wheels are made from a number of superposed sheets of sized abrasive-containing felted fibrous material by first pressing, e.g. in the cold, to form a slab, cutting out pieces of the desired size and shape from the slab, and further consolidating the pieces e.g. under heat and pressure, to the desired final thickness. The felted fibrous material may be a web made by superposing a number of thin carded webs, or a number of layers made by wet-felting in paper machines, and the abrasive may be incorporated before, during or after formation of the web. The sizing material may be applied to the web before being wound in roll form, and sheets cut from the roll as required, or sheets cut from an unsized web may be sized individually before assembly. The first consolidation may be at 4,000 lbs. per square inch in the cold, and the final consolidation at 1,700 lbs. per square inch and 260F. for 15 minutes. Curing may be completed by subsequent heating in an oven for 5 hours. The adhesives, abrasives, and other ingredients are those specified in Specification 604,930: Specifications 555,640, 557,038 'and 638,668 also are referred to.
